The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
