New Year Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Predicted Across the UK
Weather experts have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Proceed In Spite of Alerts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," noted the Met Office.
Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are due to be cold, so additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- People have been urged to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are expected on trains and buses.
Temperatures Expected to Plummet Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Warnings Activated
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this signified the weather was likely to trigger major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, dressing for the cold is absolutely paramount.
