{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces close call with F1 marshals
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel crossed the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident occurred on the third circuit when safety workers were seen on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to swap his broken nose section
Racer's Instant Response
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Obviously there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit safety personnel can be permitted to just dash across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was notified that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the FIA
"In the third rotation, marshals were notified and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch officials were withdrawn and a caution signal was raised in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred subsequent to that time"
