We are analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
