England to Start the European Championship 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium

The England national team will initiate their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they attain the relatively straightforward qualification for a championship hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an English men’s match since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to welcome the Three Lions for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.

England are set to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, if they top the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would take place at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.

Championship Kickoff and Rally

The event was launched at an ceremony in central London on the previous evening. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were barracked as they approached the location by about 50 protesters, who urged the Israeli team to be expelled from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.

Placards were held up with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Timeline

The first match of the tournament will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a match that will involve Wales if they qualify.

The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.

It is hoped that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from the following campaign, will cater to families and help reach a broader range of viewers.

Qualifying Teams

The Irish team are scheduled to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualification process; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the tournament through the standard process.

Venues and Playoffs

Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the last eight staged at each country’s national stadium.

The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.

Official Statement

“It will be a competition for the followers and a showcase of everything we value about the game – its passion and ability to bring people together.”

In excess of three million passes, a record for a Euro tournament, are anticipated to be offered to fans.
